Moving Forward one step at a time
It has been almost a month since I last wrote a blog post, making Pokemon Tower Defense changed my life quite a bit but the changes in the last few months have had a greater impact on me than anything else in my life and they aren't done. What changes are you talking about Sam? The biggest change was moving out from my parent's house. The move itself wasn't that bad besides having my computers stop working for a bit. The transition has been harder. You go from a place where most of the responsibilities are split among several people living in a home to just you. You are responsible for everything and everything takes time. Time away from doing the things you were used to doing. After about a month I feel like I'm getting used to it and I'm able to split my time effectively so that I can create content for you guys and girls. My wedding in also very near (less than 2 months away) luckily we have most of the preparations done and now it will be all about the final details. It has been a fun journey and I look forward to actually getting the wedding done. For the honeymoon I will be away for 2 weeks, so there won't be any updates during that time since I won't be around. That is why I'm not taking breaks now and I try to keep pushing forward one step at a time.

This week's update
For this week I really want to keep advancing the story mode of the game. We have been stuck at one badge for such a long time! I think it's time to reach Azalea Town and get our second badge! Along the way we will travel through South Route 32, Union Cave and Route 33. There will be new pokemon to catch, a new item to buy and some new PTD1 to PTD2 transfers!

One of the pokemon that you can catch is Slowpoke. Slowpoke will have a chance to be holding a King's rock and that will be the only way to get one for now so look out for that. You will be able to evolve Slowpoke into Slowking and Poliwhirl into Politoed by trading them with the King's Rock so look forward to that.

Also this update we will finally be adding the Cosmoid Fundraiser rewards for those who donated 10 or more they will be able to choose one of the cosmoid starters for their PTD2 collection!

As usual we will also have the mystery gift and the giveaway pokemon. Right now it looks like Poison will win this week.

Sam and Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 3

              Our Goal: $50,000

              Last Week's Update/Server Issues
We had a crazy week last week, both in a good and bad way. Let's start with the bad. So instead of telling you the story how it unfolded I will just tell you what the problem was and how it caused all the issues that we had. Okay. So Databases need indexes. Imagine you have a giant book and it has no index. How would you find that page you are looking for without having to go through the whole book? You can't! So I had a tiny database (the one that keeps track of what events you had done in the story) that was missing an index. Initially the database was so small that it didn't matter. But as the game grew in size and in users this database grew. It has over 2 million entries and so every day as the database grew so did the slowdown. It got so slow that our host suspended our account. I told them to put it back up so I could disable all logins while I fixed the problem. I was really conflicted about all this. I'm no expert on databases or server administration so I had very little idea on where to start. Luckily I had bought this book called High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backups, and Replication. While I didn't have the time to read the whole book or follow everything it had to say, it did give me some ideas on trying to find the problem and how to fix it. After doing some test to see how long each thing took to load I found that loading events was taking way too long even when I was the only user playing the game, which brought the discovery of the missing index on that database. Other than that I made some upgrades to the database engines (I changed from mysam to innodb, for those with database knowledge) that should let more people in at a time. There might be some side effects to these changes that I will have to fix but I'm pretty happy that we are somewhat back to working order.

The good stuff is the new content that I was able to bring to the game. I finally put in running shoes into the game which let you move at twice the speed. (Your pokemon will also move fast, I did have a version where your pokemon wasn't as fast and he would be left behind) You can get the shoes by talking to an old man in Cherrygrove City after you defeat Zapdos there. Another big and daunting task that I had was to add fishing. I actually go the chance to stream while I was making the fishing part and frankly I had no idea how I was going to add fishing. Luckily I'm pretty quick at thinking about how to solve problems and so I thought of a way to add it in and it worked out pretty well. You can now get an old rod or good rod by defeating the fisher man on the second part of Route 32 (Read the FAQ page for more detailed info). Once you have a rod you can go to any water source available in the game and fish on it (press spacebar or z) this will trigger a battle. Things like which rod you are using, which location you are in, time of day will affect who you get to battle with. I basically set it up to mimic the actual game. I'm really happy with how it turned out so I hope you guys can enjoy it.

On top of all of this I added all the generation 1 pokemon that you can capture in PTD2 to the PTD1 to PTD2 transfers. This includes: Jigglypuff, Wigglypuff, Zubat, Golbat, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebell, Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Gastly, Haunter, Gengar, Poliwag, Poliwrath, Krabby, Kingler, Staryu and Starmie. As I do every week there was also a Mystery Gift and a Giveaway pokemon. The Mystery Gift was electric ghost type Rotom and the giveaway was Plusle and Minun. If you got the code in time you would get 2 of each Plusle and Minun. One male and one female.

Last but not least Cosmoids had a nice update. I added more losing conditions, if you let enough bug creatures pass you will lose the level. You can tell how many lives you have left by the heart graphic on the top left. Evan, one of our freelance artist, also did a revision on the grass graphic for the first level. While I thought the original ones looked fine, Dan thought they needed more work. And so Evan did the job and they look great! The other thing I added was a fainting animation to the units. Instead of disappearing you will now see them flip on their backs and then flash before they disappear. These types of details go a long way in making a game. Each of them bringing us closer to a full game.

              What's happening this week:

              Pokemon Center Bugs
I need detailed information about the Pokemon Center Bugs with Breeding, Trading and Picking up pokemon. The more step by step information you can give me the better.

              Mystery Gift
Like every week we will have a mystery gift and a giveaway for the runner up of the poll. You have one day to vote for which of the remaining types should be the new mystery gift. Then I will post specific pokemon that can be the mystery gift and giveaway.

              PTD1 to PTD2 Transfers
My goal this week is to add a lot of Generation 1 Pokemon into PTD2. So this week I plan to add: Vulpix, Ninetails, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Paras, Parasect, Venonat, Venomoth, Diglett, Dugtrio, Meowth, Persian, Psyduck, Golduck, Mankey, Primeape, Growlithe, Arcanine, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Machop, Machoke, and Machamp. Adding these will make it so that you can get more than half of the Generation 1 Pokemon into PTD2!

              Sun Stone
Since we are adding the Oddish family and Bellossom is part of Generation 2 then I'm also adding the Sun Stone so that Gloom can evolve into Bellossom!

Cosmoids Level Select Screen and Level 2
For Cosmoids this week I want to start work on Level 2. I really want each level to feel different than the others so each level will take some time to create. On level 2 is when you finally get your first creature, but please note that you won't be able to save just yet. Since we will have multiple levels we also need a level select screen. Very similar to PTD1 there will be different chapters. I'm looking forward to making this!

Sam and Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 3
Help us keep making games and earn awesome prizes like Shiny Rayquaza and Shiny Heatran!
              Our Goal: $50,000

              Last Week's Update
We had a huge update last week.We added over 20 new pokemon between the PTD1 to PTD2 transfers, the mystery gift, giveaway and the new fisherman level. On top of that we had a special easter hunt that will last all this week to get a Shiny Buneary. This also meant a lot of new moves that your other pokemon can also learn. We also had an unfortunate Bidoof epidemic that lasted a whole day! Those fools! There was also three new battles added with the happy fisherman. I added a new thing that will change the battle you will face with the fisherman depending on the day of the week. Shiny Heatran was added as an additional prize that you can now redeem for donating 10 or more for our fundraiser. Last but not least I managed to sneak in some Cosmoids time and added the grass graphics, the bug bite graphic, the win/lose screens, some tweaks on speed, hp and sizes for the enemy units. On top of that I tweaked the hitspot for the bigger bug to scale along with it's size so you don't have to be so close to attack it.

              Running
A much requested feature for PTD2 has been the running shoes, so this week I will be adding them in. What I'm thinking now is that you will get them early on in the game, so you will have to go back to Cherrygrove City and talk to somebody to get them. But new players will get them right away after the zapdos fight. You will be able to toggle them on the pokepad menu.

              Fishing
Not as highly requested but requested nonetheless is fishing. This week you will be able to get your old rod for just trying one of the fisherman's battles. Then to get the Good Rod you will have to beat all three of the fisherman battles. If you already beat them you won't have to do so again since I'm already keeping track of it. Once you have a rod you just step infront of a water source and interact with it (press spacebar).

PTD1 to PTD2 Transfers - The gang is all here!
This week I will be adding all the Generation 1 pokemon that you can already capture in PTD2 to the transfer. Specifically Jigglypuff, Wigglypuff, Zubat, Golbat, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel, Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Gastly, Haunter, Genger, and Onix. On top of that any new pokemon added from Gen 1 will automatically get added to the PTD1 transfers. Since we are adding fishing this week. That means Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, Krabby, Kingler, Staryu, and Starmie.

              Mystery Gift
It looks like Electric is going to win this week so we will get an Electric Mystery Gift and Giveaway. Make your voice heard in the poll above the blog.

Cosmoids - Three strikes and you're out!
Last week we added the win/lose screen. Winning is pretty straight forward. Defeat all the enemies. But losing is incomplete. Right now you will only lose if your tower faints, but in reality if you let too many bugs passing by then you will lose. The lucky number will be 3 for this first level. Another thing I want to add this week is a proper fainting animation for units in the game. In PTD1 and PTD2 when something faints it simply disappears. For Cosmoids I want a small animation to play when something faints before it disappears. Just small little touches that help make the game more complete.

                Latest PTD2 Update
The last PTD2 update v1.36 and 1.36.1 brought a whole lot of new things. I want to quickly go over them. Last week we added 4 new families to transfer from PTD1 over to PTD2. The Pikachu, Sandshrew, Nidoran Female, and Nidoran Male families. A really great side effect of bringing over the Pikachu Family is that you can now breed Pikachus to get your very own Pichu! If you don't know how to transfer from PTD1 to PTD2 visit our FAQ page for more information. We also added 2 new evolution items. The Dusk Stone and the Reaper Cloth. These items will evolve the Ghost Pokemon we recently had for the mystery gift. Speaking of Mystery Gift we added the Steel pokemon week Shiny Aron as the Mystery Gift for this week. A new tradition I started is to give away the runner up from the Mystery Gift pool in a series of giveaways during the week. This week we gave out shiny Beldum. Today I will do another giveaway after 10PM Eastern Time for more Shiny Beldum so stay tuned on my twitter to find out when. Last but not least we increased the Soft Level Cap to 25! This added 37 new moves to the game that your pokemon can now relearn!

The Amazing Breeder, Rock Solid and Slice and Dice!
So the next update v1.37 will bring in more PTD1 to PTD2 transfers this time one of the most requested pokemon will show up. That pokemon is Ditto! The reason people want Ditto is that Ditto is able to breed with most pokemon especially those that don't have gender like Beldum and Golett. The other pokemon that I'm bringing over is the rock solid Onix and the slice and dicer Scyther! Why those two? Well I think you can figure that out. They both evolve by trading them with the item Metal Coat. Which means the Metal Coat will be available in the game. This time it will be different, instead of it just showing up in the item store you will have to find them hidden in the game then once you find the item, they will be unlocked to buy in the item store.

                Story Level
I have been recently been focusing on  adding new pokemon to the game and adding new attacks. That is still my focus but I have to agree that it has been a while since we had some story action. This level will have the gang finally head over to the Ruins of Alph after your encounter with the Unown. What secrets will you discover and why where the Unown grabbing the stones away? Maybe we will find out!

                Mystery Gift
Like every week we will have a Mystery Gift. So far it looks like Ice type is winning but let's see if somehow things change. Like last week we will also have the runner up pokemon giveaways. I'm aware that people that created multiple accounts can receive a giveaway pokemon for each account. I'm going to look into ways where I can limit that. Also I'll try to do the giveaways at different times so that people in different time zones can have a chance at getting them. Some have mentioned to have the giveaway available for a whole day but I think that will greatly reduce the value of the giveaway. Lastly some of you have mentioned adding the giveaways in the adoption center and I believe I will slowly add them starting this week with Luvdisc.

                Cosmoids UI and Move Types
Didn't get a whole lot of work done on Cosmoids. The soft level cap increase took a lot longer than I expected so I didn't get that much time. This week I'm going to focus on smaller more specific goals so that I can tackle them much easier. A big thing about Cosmoids that we are planning to do is to only allow you to have one creature out at a time. Meaning you will always have your characters tower plus one creature. You can swap at any time to a different creature. So this week I will be setting up that functionality in the early alpha and seeing how it plays out. Sometimes when you are making games you really have to build your idea out before you can say for sure if it is good or not and I think this is one of those cases. The other thing I want to work on for Cosmoids this week is a new type of move type. This move type will have you dragging the attack to the spot you want the attack to happen. Your character will have an attack like this with a long cooldown.

                Weekly Progress
Now that we have looked at what we will be working on this week, let's take a look at the specifics. I will be updating this during the week as I work on it all week.

                Status: Not Working.

Welcome to the Sam & Dan Games Developer Blog! This is a really late blog post this week. Like every week I was very busy but I did get some things done which is good. First of all let's talk about how great you guys are.

PTD 1 was voted BEST Browser Defense game for 2012!
We couldn't have done it without you guys voting for us! We really appreciate it! For those of you asking you don't really win anything for this but it is an honor to be recognized :)

                  Fundraiser
The fundraiser is still ongoing and will be around for a while. The good thing about doing this on the blog instead of a site like Kickstarter or Indiegogo is that we don't have a strict deadline. That is not to say that we won't bring our funding to Kickstarter at some point, just right now isn't the right time for us. The funding has been picking up, mainly due to the Shiny Legendary prize that I recently indirectly announced with the poll above. We passed the 1% point which I'm happy about, on to the next percentage :) With the new prize announced this also means we are in phase 2 of the funding. Each new prize will mean a new phase. The phases just means that there are new prizes yet to be announced. So let's look at some info!

                  Other ways to donate
Many of you have mentioned that you don't own credit cards or that you don't have money to donate but would still like to help out and get some prizes. Well I stumbled about a potential way to make this happen. Pretty soon I will be able to offer a way that you can watch an advertisement video and in return I get tiny amount of money (usually 1 cent or less) that I will count as a donation from you. Granted to reach $5 or more it will take a lot of video watching and time but at least you will be able to get access to the early alpha and help us get closer to our funding goals. I will also use this as a way to get daily coins and possible other items for the games such as berries or tms. It's a way that you can help us keep going while only spending a few minutes of your time.

                  Still working on Cosmoids
I honestly barely got any work done on cosmoids last week. The most I've been able to do is make some story scenes for the beginning of the game. Game development is not easy, it has a lot to do with momentum. You want to get the ball rolling on a project and then it becomes much easier to keep going on it. On the other hand I don't want to rush this project just to meet my own deadlines. Deadlines are important to help push a project but if you have to sacrifice the quality for it then it might not be worth sticking to those deadlines. There was a saying "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is forever bad."
                  Pokemon Tower Defense 2
This week for PTD2 we have the soft cap level raised to 20. Incase you don't know the soft level cap is the level in which pokemon will stop learning new moves. For the pokemon that we have in the game so far including Karrablast it took 27 new moves to reach this level cap. I did a giant list and to go from 20 to 100 it would be 172 new moves. It would take a long time for the soft cap to reach 100 and that would also mean that there would be no new levels to play. With developing PTD2 the way I am and with you guys being able to play the game at this point I can't just focus on one area in the game and push that all the way through. For example if I continued the story levels but didn't add to the soft cap we wouldn't have great moves to pick from. If I just added 1v1 levels then you would never be able to catch any new pokemon. It is a tricky balance.

Like Cosmoids I didn't get to look at any of the bug fixes this week. They are still in my radar but I'm not sure exactly when I will be able to take care of them.
